A bold new era: Looking at emerging graphic design trends in 2023

With 2023 now well and truly here, all industries, including digital marketing, have had enough time to put their new year plans into effect. This is particularly true for creative fields like graphic design where a new year means the chance to experiment with new (and often radical) concepts that can break the previously established mould.

Today, we at Idecution present to you our pick of graphic design trends to look out for in 2023:

Minimalism

While minimalism is by no means a new concept, we predict this style of design to leave its mark in 2023. The idea of a minimalistic design is to use the minimum possible number of elements, colours, and text in order to create a visually simplistic but appealing creative. This type of design is particularly effective when the product being advertised is a household name which can benefit from the lack of distractions on the creative.

3D

As 3D designing tools become more advanced and affordable, graphic designers are now getting the chance to experiment with unique designs and to incorporate 3D elements into their designs to give them an oomph factor. Using computer-modelling software, graphic designers can create objects within a three-dimensional space to give a more realistic feel as compared to a flat design. Holographic design, a subset of 3D designs, is expected to become more popular in 2023.

Psychedelic Shapes And Fonts

While futuristic designs like 3D designs are rising to prominence, retro designs still remain popular. The use of psychedelic shapes and fonts to create visuals as throwbacks to the 1960s or 1970s is still a popular choice. Bright colours and abstract illustrations are a staple of this type of design. The rise in their popularity has been largely attributed to the nostalgia it evokes among older segments of the population and the introduction of newer generations to a form of design that they haven’t experienced first-hand before.

Inclusive Visuals

As the world strives to be more inclusive, the concept has always started to make its mark in all aspects of daily life. Graphic design is no exception to that. Simply put, the inclusive design seeks to accommodate the viewpoints, experiences, and situations of people that have not been accommodated before. These designs are typically prominent in progressive, forward-thinking companies like new-age tech companies. This concept is not just limited to the designing of images, videos, etc. but can also be used in website design as well. The accessibility menu is a great example as it allows users suffering from epilepsy to pause animations, from poor eyesight to increase contrast and font size, and from dyslexia to change the font type.

Hand-Drawn Or Custom Illustrations

While there are always going to be fancy designing softwares loaded with tools that can help designers create new and revolutionary images, it is important to remember the roots of any great art - hand-drawn designs. Hand-Drawn Or Custom Illustrations are vivid visual presentations of ideas, tones, brand personality, and are mainly used for specific messaging. The hand-drawn style of illustration gives your design a more human feel and better appeals to emotions as compared to stock images.

Anti-Design

While all the other design styles we have seen so far are new and exciting, they still conform to the basic rules and tenets of graphic design. However, the concept of anti-design bucks the rules of conventional design in favour of challenging, experimental layouts. This means doing away with the clean, symmetrical, grid-based layouts in favour of loud colours, crowded, and asymmetrical designs. This is a by-product of the ongoing cultural rebellion against standard conventions, traditions, norms, etc. While this design style may be unpolished, messy, and complicated, it is designed to appeal to the “anti-everything” nature of today’s youth.
